What To Pack First When Moving?
By maffuccimoving March 01, 2025
So much to do, so little time. Or at least, that’s how it seems when you’re getting ready to move. There are things to sort through, lots to donate, and even more to pack. Not to mention all the different stops you’ll have to make on the goodbye tour. It’s easy to see how moving can quickly become stressful, leading to short tempers and exhaustion. To avoid relocation burnout, consider working with a professional mover. They’ll help you navigate that seemingly ever-growing, moving checklist.
Maffucci Moving started as a family business way back in 1909. Since then, our team has earned a reputation for being a hassle-free moving team. It’s a title we don’t take lightly. That’s why our movers are fully vetted and expertly trained to ensure your items get to where they’re going safely. We’ve trained our team to assist customers with every moving aspect, from figuring out efficient packing techniques to furniture reassembly. You can trust us to handle your belongings with care.
Where to Start
The first question you’ll ask yourself when moving is probably this: “Where do I even start?” By making a plan! It doesn’t have to be an overwhelming thing. We promise stress-free moving is possible! All you need to do is take it one step at a time and work with us to craft a plan that works for you. Let’s begin.
- Make an inventory. Go through each room and write down what’s in it. From there, review the list and decide what can be thrown out, donated, or kept.
- Start packing early. One of the best packing tips for moving we can give you is not to procrastinate. The sooner you start organizing and packing, the better.
- Create a timeline. Consider the distance to your moving day. Then, work backward to build a realistic packing timeline that will keep you on task and unstressed.
- Buy plenty of supplies. Before packing, go to the nearest Home Depot, Lowes, or Walmart to gather boxes, packing paper, bubble wrap, tape, labels, moving blankets, and a dolly.
- Start with non-essentials. Items already in storage, such as holiday decorations, unused furniture, nostalgic but unused items, and gift supplies, can be packed first, leaving the essentials for easy access at the end.
Helpful Tips and Tricks
Okay, you’ve got the supplies. You’ve laid out your plan. Now it’s time to talk about efficient packing tips. Getting and staying organized early is essential to minimize your stress during this time. To do that, adhere to the following tips and tricks:
- Clean items before packing them (especially fragile artwork so protective layerings properly stick).
- Pack one room at a time, grouping similar items together.
- Label boxes with the room it’s destined for and content descriptions.
- Wrap fragile items in bubble wrap, place them in boxes filled with packing peanuts or paper, and double-tape the bottom of the box.
- Use the nesting-doll technique to save room and protect breakable items.
- Remember to take measurements of your new home to ensure furniture fits.
- Keep boxes under 50 pounds, as making them too heavy will cause them to be unstable and may bust the bottom.
- Don’t use old boxes for fragile items– they’re more likely to collapse.
- Always keep your tools (e.g., box cutter, tape, bubble wrap, labels, screwdriver, and hammer) handy and available to avoid injury and unnecessary item breakage.
Unpacking Tips
For a smooth and efficient unpacking process in your new home:
- Instead of putting everything in one room, carry the boxes into the room they belong to and leave them there until you can unpack.
- Clean the house before you unpack everything just to move them once again.
- Anticipate what you’ll need while you unpack, like closet shelving, and install them next.
- Complete any repairs and paint patch jobs that need to be done before unboxing things.
- Unpack on a deadline (i.e., ten boxes daily, two rooms daily, etc.), doing the essentials first.
- Avoid flitting between rooms while unpacking if you get bored– it’ll cause a bigger mess than it’s worth.
- Decorate last to avoid distractions.
- Motivate yourself to keep going and finish with little rewards (e.g., ordering out, getting ice cream, taking an hour-long break, etc.)
