Preparing for the Move

As you begin packing for the move, your outdoor space and storage will likely be the last area you’ll likely organize, closely followed by the refrigerator that keeps all your favorite grill-worthy goods from going bad. Before packing a grill for moving and easier assembly later, thoroughly clean it. Trust us; you don’t want leftover grease, food particles, and dirt stuck to it during transport.

To clean it:

1. Wear protective gloves. Turn the heat to high and let it run for about 15 minutes.
2. Turn it off. While it’s still warm, clean the racks with a wire brush dipped in water.
3. Once it cools, use a towel to wipe off the residue.
4. Clean the interior following your owner’s manual instructions. Follow the specific guidelines as certain cleaning solutions or methods may damage it.
5. Clean the exterior with warm, soapy water and a clean rag. Rinse it off and let it dry.

Pre-Packing Do’s and Don’ts

Before packing up the grill, ensure it’s completely cooled down. Depending on your model, disassembling the grill for moving might be advisable. Many grills have parts and accessories that can be easily removed. Taking them out helps prevent damage from shifting during transport. Once you’ve done this, secure the lid and other moving parts with straps.

When protecting grill parts during transport, wrap any non-disassemblable parts with moving blankets. This keeps them safe and prevents scratches to the paint. Just make sure to leave handles and wheels exposed for easy unloading. Pack smaller parts that could easily get lost into clear, sealable bags and label them properly. Then, place the bags into a larger box with padding.

Moving Day

Now that you’re prepared, all that’s left is to move. Before packing the grill, double-check that you’ve removed propane tanks or briquettes. They should never be transported attached, as propane isn’t permitted in moving trucks, and you can’t place them in storage units.

While most grills are light enough for two people to carry, some may be heavier and require professional assistance. Grills with wheels are the easiest to move since they don’t need lifting. These can be pushed from the back and gently guided onto moving trucks. Generally, moving vehicles or pickup trucks are the best options for transporting these items as they can remain upright. Once in the truck, use bungee cords to secure it against the wall or even large pieces of furniture.
