Do’s and don’ts of Pantry Packing
When you’re ready to tackle your food hub, reviewing the best way to pack pantry items is essential. Doing so lets you maximize your packing supplies and ensures minimal food waste.
So, let’s review some of the other do’s and don’ts when moving with food items (specifically canned goods):
- Do use plastic food containers to prevent pests from getting into food and prevent spills
- Don’t use filler or packing materials (wastes box space)
- Do use plastic totes to avoid boxes from collapsing under the weight of canned goods
- Don’t leave significant gaps between items
- Do pack heavy items (rice and large cans) at the bottom and light items (pasta and tortillas) on top
- Don’t forget to check if there are food restrictions when moving to a new state or country (re., Fresh produce, meat, and dairy due to pests and disease concerns)
- Do consider donating non-perishable items to organizations like Move For Hunger, LICares, and others.
Pantry Packing Methods
Figuring out how to pack food for a move doesn’t have to be stressful. It can be pretty straightforward in most cases. At least a month before your move, go through your pantry, refrigerator, and freezer inventory. Start by throwing out items that have expired or are nearing their expiration date. If there are items you know you won’t eat but aren’t near expiration, donate them to your local food bank. When taking inventory, check if there are open food items. You’ll want to eat these in the days leading up to your move or throw them out. Transporting opened items increases the risk of a mess being made.
Most unopened, pre-packaged, non-perishable items like soup, seasonings, and spices are relatively easy to pack up and move. Remember to group similar items when packing to make the unpacking process faster. As a general rule of thumb, keep food items you plan on eating before and during the move-out until the last minute. This way, you’ll be able to make a lunch for the road instead of making unnecessary stops and spending money you could save. Moving Perishable Foods
Contrary to popular belief, it is possible to move perishable food. The key is to pack it correctly. On the day of your move, use a cooler, ice packs, or a portable freezer to keep the items fresh. When loading the car, avoid placing them near heat sources. With these precautions, you can safely transport your perishable items to your new home.
Moving Long-distance
If you’re moving a long distance and require storage:
- Toss all food that expires in six months or sooner
- Seal all containers with tape or use zip-lock bags
- Wrap glass jars in bubble wrap or packing paper
- Pack items in small, sturdy boxes
- Confirm with the moving company if they allow food items
- Label each box with its contents
